Is IELTS 6.5 B2 or C1?
IELTS 6.5 is in the B2 range (5.5 to 6.5). C1 starts at IELTS 7.0. Some institutions describe 6.5 as "upper B2".
What IELTS band do I need for B2 and C1?
As a guide, B1 is 4.0 to 5.0, B2 is 5.5 to 6.5, C1 is 7.0 to 8.0 and C2 is 8.5 to 9.0.
Does IELTS give me an official CEFR level?
No. IELTS does not issue a CEFR certificate. The comparison is only a guide, so if an institution asks for a specific CEFR level, check whether they accept an IELTS band instead.
Why do different websites show different CEFR levels for the same band?
The two scales were designed separately, so the link between them is approximate and some websites use slightly different cut-offs. This tool uses the commonly published IELTS guide.
